This morning brought two more twists in the Colts Coach/Peyton Manning Saga. First, Jim Irsay tweeted "Predict new Colts Head Coach, win 2 Super Bowl Tics! 1 guess only,u must guess by midnite tonight EST,Abby's hatpick!"
This sparked the idea that the Head Coach announcement might come as early as tomorrow. Then again, as Dan Dakich with WFNI 1070 The Fan put it today "...maybe Irsay just wants to solicit the fans ideas to give them more choices for the coach". Who knows?
Then, Bob Kravitz of The Indianapolis Star published an article today about an interview with Peyton Manning on Monday.
Here is a quote from the interview: "I never thought 'Sodapop Curtis' would announce my retirement," Manning said, laughing, referring to Lowe’s character in the 1983 movie "The Outsiders." "I always thought I would be the one to announce it. I'm a huge fan of the movie, but that caught me way off guard. I can't explain it. I know he (Lowe) is a friend of Jim's (Irsay), and Jim sounded surprised." The entire story can be found here: http://indy.st/xgZDKB.
Manning went on to say that he hasn't had but one small conversation with new GM Ryan Grigson and it was only after the two "bumped" into each other in the hall way.
Irsay has the Colts front office on tight lock down these days. Heck, we still haven't heard on our request for media credentials, understanding that they are a little busy over there. Knowing that, we know, well nothing.
Manning said he is still working on his rehab but he won't know anything about his ability to play for a while. Rob Lowe or not, we can't call it either way. It would be a devastating blow to this city if Peyton Manning is playing or even in uniform for another franchise next year. But if that's not what is coming then why won't anyone speak to him? Then there is the possibility of Jim Tressel being your next Head Coach. The Colts will have even more P.R. work on their hands if they make that decision a reality. Tressel resigned from Ohio State for NCAA violations and the mere chance of him coaching here is a polarizing subject in Indy.
It's hard to believe that Irsay will make such unpopular calls given his love for this city and this franchise. But remember folks; the Colts, like where you work, is a business first.
Sometimes business is unpopular. Sometimes business is necessary.
